Prepare a Flood Plan for Pets

Original preparedness explainer · Reviewed as a draft October 29, 2026 · General U.S. guidance

Pets cannot read evacuation maps, but they do need leashes, carriers, food, medication and a destination that accepts animals.

Keep a carrier or leash near the exit and an accessible copy of vaccination records. Confirm pet accommodation before an emergency.

Include a trusted backup caregiver and two possible destinations, because shelters and hotels have different policies.

Follow local warnings and evacuation instructions. Never drive or walk into floodwater; it can hide currents, debris and damaged road surfaces.

Put this into action

Choose one manageable improvement today. Confirm current warnings and local instructions with your city/county emergency management agency and the National Weather Service.
