Generator Safety Is Not Optional

Original preparedness explainer · Reviewed as a draft October 29, 2026 · General U.S. guidance

A generator can help maintain essential power, but misuse creates a serious carbon monoxide risk. The fumes are invisible and can be deadly.

Run portable generators outdoors at least 20 feet from doors, windows and other building openings, following Ready.gov guidance and the equipment manual.

Install functioning carbon monoxide alarms with battery backup and never power the home by plugging a generator into an ordinary wall outlet.

Prepare battery-powered lighting, charging options, food-safety supplies and a plan for medical equipment that needs electricity. Never run a generator, charcoal grill or camp stove indoors or in an attached garage.
